Joint admissions exercise 1998

Description: The Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) 1998 was conducted at the Temasek Polytechnic Auditorium Foyer from 3 to 7 March 1998. The objective of the JAE was to allow students who sat for their O-level exams to apply for admission to courses in the polytechnics of their choice. Temasek Polytechnic registered a total of 3,629 first-choice applicants compared with 3271 in 1997, a 10.9% increase.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic 1994 Graduation Ceremony was held at the Kallang Theatre on 19 July. It saw the first batch of graduands from the School of Engineering Electronics and Mechatronics courses and School of Business Operation Management course. The Tay Eng Soon Award was also presented to the most outstanding ITE graduate for the first time. The award was to commemorate the late Dr Tay Eng Soon who was Chairman of the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Minister-in-charge of the polytechnics. Rear Admiral (NS) Teo Chee Hean, Minister of State for Finance and Minister of State for Communications was the Guest-of-Honour for session 1. Mr David Chin, Deputy CEO, Trade Development Board was the Guest-of-Honour for session 2.

Campus Care Network Day 1994

Description: The Campus Care Network (CCN) Day is held annually at Temasek Polytechnic, a tradition where staff and students put up a campus-wide bazaar and sale to raise funds for students in need of financial assistance and also to cultivate community spirit and bonding amongst staff and students. Study rooms for "O" and "A" level students

Description: Temasek Polytechnic opened four classrooms to students studying for their "O" and "A" level examinations. The classrooms were located at Block 25 of Temasek Engineering School and opened daily from 9am to 10pm except on Sundays. Some lecturers even dropped by to help students with their revision. Temasek Tech2000 Games

Description: Temasek Tech2000 Games held on 15 September 2000 was organised by Temasek Engineering School as part of the national Techmonth 2000 and TP's 10th Anniversary celebration. About 500 secondary school students attended the event and participated in the games and competitions organised. Guest-of-Honour for the event was Mr Teo Ming Kian, Chairman of the National Science and Technology Board.

Temasek Polytechnic Open House 1999

Description: The Temasek Polytechnic Open House was held from 4 to 6 February 1999. The theme for the Open House was "Be Yourself, Be the Best and Be at TP. Students were recruited as I-Guides to guide and provide information on the polytechnic to visitors. Beside course and career counselling, celebrities such as Kate Reyes from Perfect 10 and TCS actress Evelyn Tan, were invited to entertain the visitors. Other highlights included in the annual event were a student fashion show, flying fox and abseiling in the Plaza and live performances such as Rhythm & Dance and skit by the Drama Club.

Beyond O Level, Poly/JC seminar 1998

Description: The Beyond O Level, a Poly/JC seminar was jointly organised by The New Paper and Temasek Polytechnic on 10 January 1998. It was held at Temasek Polytechnic campus and sponsored by American International Assurance (AIA). O Level holders and their parents attended the seminar to find out what the various educational institutions had to offer. The three guest speakers for the seminar were: Mrs Belinda Charles, principal of St Andrew's Junior College; Mr Moses Wong, registrar of Temasek Polytechnic; and Mr Eugene Wijeysingha, former headmaster of Raffles Institution and columnist on educational matters for The New Paper. One-on-one counselling was also provided after the seminar for students and parents with specific queries. The team of counsellors included those from St Andrew's Junior College, lecturers from Temasek Polytechnic and guidance officers from the Ministry of Education.

Freshmen Orientation Camp 1991

Description: The Students' Union took over the organisation of the orientation for new students in June 1991. They organised a residential camp which was attended by about 140 students. For the day activities, the average attendance per day was between 250 and 300 students.

Life Sciences Week

Description: The first Life Sciences Week organised by Temasek Applied Science School was held on 18 to 23 June 2001. The event comprised of 14 exhibition booths representing various aspects of the Life Sciences, workshops for staff and students, launched of the Life Sciences website and a Healthy Cooking Competition. The event ended with the finals of the Interschool Healthy Cooking Competition for secondary schools. The competition, jointly organised with The Singapore National Heart Association (SNHA), attracted 127 teams from 67 secondary schools. The students cooked up scrumptious, healthy "on-the-go" meals within a budget of $5. The winner was a team comprising of two boys from Tanjong Katong Secondary School.

Temasek Polytechnic Open House 2003

Description: The Temasek Polytechnic Open House was held from 20 to 22 February 2003. The annual event was held to enable secondary school students to make an informed choice regarding their educational path after they have completed their studies. I-Guides, a group of volunteer students, were on hand to guide visitors around the campus. Visitors were treated to a showcase of TP's courses, facilities and outstanding projects. They could also experienced e-travel and be on air @ the media room. The finale of the Open House was the Hop and Jam session with entertainment by Project MX2, a talent showcase featuring TP students, Najip Ali, Sheikh Haikel, Chua Lee Lian and Randall Tan.

It also saw the first batch of 68 graduates from the Diploma in Legal Studies. Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for National Development, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs & Chairman of the National Youth Council was the Guest-of-Honour for session I. Parents as partners in career planning seminar

Description: The Parents as Partners in Career Planning Seminar was held on 4 October 1997. The seminar aimed to help potential applicants make informed choices for their future. Close to 1,000 parents and their teenager children attended the seminar to seek information concerning choice of courses and career prospects. Guest of Honour, Mr Charles Chong, MP for Pasir Ris GRC, gave a keynote address on "Parents' Role In Career Planning. Other speakers at the seminar included Mr Goh Ah Bee, Managing Director, Leica Instruments (S) Pte Ltd, who gave insights into the"Rising Profile of Polytechnic Education and Career Opportunities", and Mr Ang Keng Loo, Deputy Principal of Temasek Polytechnic, who spoke on "TP - Your Partner in Career Planning".

Campus Care Network Day 1992

Description: In its second year of operation, the Campus Care Network (CCN) was established in August 1991, with the aim to bring lecturers and students together, to maintain a caring culture, so as to foster students' personal growth. In 1992, CCN organised food fair and jumble sale to raise funds for Temasek Polytechnic students who needed financial help. It was held from 11am to 2pm on 11 August. TP staff set-up mini make-shift stalls for the event, selling varying items, such as, apple and chicken pies, tarts, satay and desserts. Staff and students were also encouraged to donate generously, either for the jumble sale items, food or cash.

Temasek Engineering School's TechGames workshops 2001

Description: Temasek Engineering School's TechGames workshops for secondary school students was held on 15 September 2001. The workshops were held in conjunction with Science.01, a month-long national event celebrating Science, Technology and Biomedicine in Singapore. Highlight of the workshop was the introduction of Sony Aibo, the popular robotic dog. Other workshops organised included an introduction to the Global Positioning System (GPS), a Solar Insect Design competition, an Intelligent Building Design module and Creative Physics.

Career Carnival at Youth Park

Description: Temasek Polytechnic organised the first Career Carnival at the Youth Park on Sommerset Road on 13 and 14 February 1999. Visitors were not only able to obtain information on the 27 full-time courses, they were also shown glimpses of the vibrant campus life. Youths and parents were also invited to participate in the TP Live chat sessions where they could log on and chat with experts on education opportunities after the 'O' Level Examinations and the "The Spirit of Adventure and Aspirations of Youths". The Guest-of-Honour was Members of Parliament, Mr S Iswaran.

TP Buddy Day

Description: About 200 students from 35 secondary schools got a taste of poly life during the Buddy Day at Temasek Polytechnic held on 28 January 1999. The annual event was organised by the institution's Polytechnic Outreach Centre. The students were paired up with TP buddy who accompanied them to lectures, tutorials, lab sessions and facilities around campus. Lecturers were also on hand at the workshops to introduce them to the equipment and to answer any questions that they may have.

Tibs great bendy bus squeeze: Guinness world record

Description: On 6 July 1998, a Guinness world record was set when 438 Temasek Polytechnic students squeezed into a Trans-Island (Tibs) bendy bus. The record-breaking event was a grand finale to a week-long orientation programme. Tibs bought a bandanna at $5 for every student that squeezed into the bus. Proceeds from the Bandanna sale went to four Singapore welfare organisations - Singapore Association for the Deaf, the Handicap Welfare Association, the Singapore Association for the Visually Handicapped and the Spastic Children's Association of Singapore.
