Description: "Anil", one of the short stories written by thirty-six-year-old Ridjal Noor, was used as a preparatory text for General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) students in the UK. Ridjal, who graduated with a Diploma in Computer Engineering from Temasek Polytechnic (TP), nurtured his love for writing when he was in TP under the guidance of his communication skills lecturer, Miss Shirley Joseph, who spotted his enthusiasm and ability to write. He wrote articles for TP's School of Engineering newsletter, "Engineerrus". Ridjal, now a successful entrepreneur, said he owed his success in writing to his days at TP.

Description: In conjunction with its 25th anniversary celebrations, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) organised a 3-day International Conference on Learning and Teaching. It was held from 29 Sep to 1 Oct 2015 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. Professor Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment, from the Institute of Education, University of London delivered the 1st and 3rd keynote addresses titled "How do we prepare our students for a world we cannot possibly imagine?" and "Principles of curriculum design". Professor Dai Hounsell, Professor of Higher Education & Vice-Principal for Academic Enhancement, Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, Scotland delivered the 2nd keynote address titled "Trying something new : rethinking teaching, advancing learning". Ms Sim Ann, Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Communications & Information was the guest-of-honour at the opening of the 3-day conference.

Description: The exhibition entitled "Coffee . Culture . Conversations" was held from 25 September to 28 October 2015 at The Art Gallery @ Temasek Polytechnic, Glocal Connect Village. The exhibition was organized by Temasek Polytechnic's Centre for TransCultural Studies (CTS), in collaboration with Maria Filatova, Dutch Colony Coffee and Santino Coffee Specialist. The Gallery exhibition featured Maria's caffeinated craft in a wall mural depicting the contemporary coffee culture in Singapore, along with a selection of her coffee paintings which did not have a protective layer so that visitors could smell the coffee! This curated exhibition was opened to the public and included workshops in Coffee painting and Latte art & barista appreciation.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Culinary & Catering Management senior, Mr Poh Zhe Kai, emerged champion after beating 14 other top local culinary students across 7 institutions in the prestigious Les Amis Awards 2015 Challenge. Andre Chiang (Restaurant Andre), Joshua Brown (CUT by Wolfgang Puck), and Willin Low (Wild Rocket Restaurant) were among the panel of 12 esteemed chef judges assembled by Les Amis. Zhe Kai took home the $3,000 cash prize, as well as an all-expenses paid '10 Michelin Stars' trip to Europe. Besides that, he also had the invaluable opportunity to meet the chef-owners behind revered kitchens such as Le Petit Nice and Troisgros.

Opened on the same day was the TP-IBM Security Operations Centre (SOC), part of the IT Security and Forensics Hub. Mr. Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic and Mr David Koh, Chief Executive, Cyber Security Agency were present at the launch. Description: Ms Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education, officiated at the opening session of Temasek Polytechnic's 25th Graduation Ceremony on Monday, 18 May 2015 at the Temasek Convention Centre. A total of 5437 students graduated from 54 full-time diploma courses and 16 part-time courses. The graduation ceremonies spanned over 14 sessions from 18 May - 22 May 2015. 2015 also saw the first cohort of 40 graduands from the Diploma in Business Intelligence & Analytics receiving their diplomas on Day 3 of TP's Graduation. Ms Indranee Rajah presented the poly level awards to the top graduates and also addressed the graduates from the full-time Diplomas in Aerospace Electronics and Aerospace Engineering at the opening session.

Press release. 06 May 2015. TP commemorates 25 years with a 25-hour run that will benefit the elderly and terminally-ill children

Description: In celebration of Temasek Polytechnic's silver jubilee, staff, students, alumni and their families came together over 25 hours to run or walk a collective distance of 10,000 km to "unlock" $25,000 from the SG50 Giving Initiative for Club Rainbow (Singapore) and the All Saints Home. Highlights of the event included a neon run, where participants were splashed with neon paint as they ran. The flag off event of the TP 25-hour Challenge was held on Thursday, 7 May 2015 at the Temasek Polytechnic Triangular Gardens. TP alumni and Project Superstar winner Alfred Sim also participated in the run. Residents of the All Saints Home joined TP's senior management team in the final lap of the 25-hour challenge on Friday 8 May at 5.00 pm. More than 5,000 participants showed their support for this meaningful event organised in celebration of TP's silver jubilee.

Description: The official launch of Temasek Polytechnic's 25th anniversary celebrations by Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Mr Goh Chok Tong was held on Wednesday, 29 April 2015 at 10am at Auditorium 1. TP was established in 1990 with five satellite campuses, and became a beautiful 30-hectare campus by the scenic Bedok Reservoir in 1995. The year long celebrations included events like the TP 25 hour challenge in May, an International Conference on Learning & Teaching in October and a home-grown musical "Crunch time" in November. Description: Temasek Polytechnic's Design Show 2015 was held from 9 to 11 April 2015 at the Temasek Polytechnic Auditorium Foyer. Among the 423 projects showcased from the graduating class of Temasek Polytechnic (TP) School of Design were: Needle-free blood glucose monitoring - a device, worn like a wristwatch that could scan and detect blood glucose levels, by Product & Industrial Design student Eddy Iswandi Yap; Building on the Garden City vision -- Environment Design students Dionne Lim proposal to re-green the densely populated Jurong Lake region and turn the Japanese Garden into an eco-haven for migratory birds while Zhao Qiuyu's idea was to reinvent the Japanese Garden into a museum for contemporary fine art that doubled up as a rainwater collection and purification zone; and Living and community spaces for migrant workers - Interior Architecture & Design student Claudia Lim's proposal was to create a modular, stackable housing system that can be fitted into a shop house alley in Singapore. The focus of the Design Show 2015 was to showcase innovative, purposeful ideas to drive change and benefit community.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and the University of Western Australia (UWA) celebrated a decade-long partnership of student exchange on 27 February 2015. The exchange programme provided almost 400 students (170 students from TP's Diploma in Communications and Media Management (CMM) and about 200 from UWA students) an opportunity to learn more about Australian education and culture for TP students and for Australian students to understand TP life and Singapore culture. His Excellency, the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, Mr Philip Green, Professor Krishna Sen, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UWA, Mr Daniel Yeow, Director, TP's School of Business as well as senior staff and students from both institutions attended the celebration held at Temasek Polytechnic. Description: The annual Graduate Employment Survey was jointly conducted by Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic to ascertain the employment status of polytechnic graduates, approximately six months after completion of final examinations. For 2014, it was held between 1 October and 8 December and attracted a total of 15,321 respondents. The 2014 Survey showed that polytechnic graduates had healthy overall employment rates and salaries, similar to those who graduated in 2013.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic's Engineering Project Show was held on Friday 9 January 2015 at the Temasek Convention Centre. Some 80 final-year projects were showcased. Among them were: an anti-riot shield with a miniature wireless camera and LED strobe lights to capture video footage of the goings-on in front of the shield, and monitored remotely and real-time at a police command centre; an enhanced ground operations safety manual that is on par with international standards; a device to deter cash card thefts from a car's In-Vehicle Unit; a remote controlled drone to save a drowning person at sea.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) partnered with Pivotal Software, Inc., and EMC Computer Systems to launch the TP-Pivotal Data Science Academy, one of the first data science academies in the Asia-Pacific region offering a practical, hands-on program for training and certifying data scientists and big data engineers. Both companies provided the hardware, software and initial expertise to kick start the Academy program. The first intake commenced in Q2/3 2015, with 100 participants enrolled in the first year. Description: Over two weekends in December, on 6 and 7, 13 and 14 December, 40 talented students, alumni and staff from Temasek Polytechnic's (TP) School of Design, in partnership with Sentosa, organised two workshops on silk-screening and card-making for children whose parents were working full-time or incarcerated in prison. The TP designers also set up shop called "Merry Makers Market" to sell unique, hand-crafted limited edition gift items that were both functional and beautiful, with some 15 stalls located at the Sentosa Boardwalk. In the spirit of inclusivity and giving during the holiday season, the children of the Fei Yue Student Care Centre and Salvation Army Prison Support Services - Kids In Play (KIP) received hand-crafted gifts from the TP design students.

Description: Jointly organised by Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic, the 11th Engineering Discovery event for students was designed to introduce them to engineering in a simple, engaging way. About 300 students from 13 secondary schools had the opportunity to discover the wonders of engineering and its possibilities - with a little bit of help from robots, iron man and a magician. Among the highlights was an interactive exhibition which offered a hands-on experience of some engineering projects. "Body balance coaching app" and "Memory challenge" were 2 projects exhibited by Temasek Polytechnic. Mr Seto Lok Yin of Republic Polytechnic, Prof Low Kin Huat of NTU, Mr Tan Jui Kuan of Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Mr Peter Ho Yew Chi of Hope Technik Pte Ltd delivered their respective talks/magic show/presentations. The 2 courses launched were the full-time Diploma in Big Data Management & Governance and the part-time Specialist Diploma in Big Data Management. As Singapore pushed towards becoming the world's first smart nation, one that is able to use technology to enhance transport, healthcare and other public services, data engineers, data scientists and data analytics professionals would be needed by businesses, government and ICT companies to leverage exponential data growth for productivity, competitiveness and growth. Description: The Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) was held from 10 -17 June 2014. Some 29 teams of students from 13 secondary schools and the ITE presented their creative proposals reinforcing and reinventing sustainable approaches to hospitality operations, specifically in the hotel sector. The theme for the competition was "Sustainability and the hotel sector" and the winners were announced on Tuesday, 17 June, 2014 at Auditorium 1, Temasek Polytechnic. TIC is an annual competition which started in 2010. It was organised by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Business (Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management, and Diploma in Leisure & Resort Management) and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board.

Description: The Design Show 2014 showcased a total of 420 projects from the graduating students of Temasek Polytechnic's School of Design. It was held at the Temasek Polytechnic Auditorium Foyer from 3 to 5 April 2014. Emphasis was placed on doing good and meaningful designs with a strong social message, resulting in an explosion of delightful, creative and innovative ideas across multiple disciplines that benefitted the community and drove change. Description: A survey conduced by staff of Temasek Polytechnic's retail management diploma on some 300 youths aged between 16 - 24 revealed that the following factors made for a happier shopping experience: a good retail mix, a clean environment, easy access to public transportation and clear directional signs. The survey done was conducted at the launch of the inaugural National Retailing Competition in June 2013, to better understand youth shopping experience in Singapore. Most of the youths favoured retailers such as Isetan, Takashimaya, Challenger, Courts, H&M, Top Shop, NTUC Fairprice, 7-Eleven, Cheers, Watsons and Guardian.

Description: The October intake of Temasek Polytechnic's School of Engineering showcased 30 final-year projects at the Engineering Project Show on 25 July 2013. Among the projects showcased were Aqua saver shower system -- a finalist in the Cool Ideas for Better HDB Living competition, this shower system automatically diverted water to a holding tank if its temperature was outside a pre-specified range, thereby saving water; Contactless charger -- a prototype of a contactless charger for mobile phones, laptops and other mobile devices; and Easy gripper -- this Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award nominee for 2014 was a device which helped the elderly or those with weak fingers or sweaty palms to pull out an AC plug from its socket effortlessly and safely.

Description: The award presentation for the winners of Tourism Innovation Competition 2013 (TIC) was held on Tuesday, 16 July 2013. Some 49 teams of students from 24 schools took part in the 2013 competition with the theme "Youth tourism". TIC was organised by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Business (Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management, and Diploma in Leisure & Resort Management) and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board. It is an annual competition started in 2010, and the aim was to arm student participants with opportunities to learn more about the tourism industry as well as career opportunities available.

Press release. 27 June 2013. Menlo Worldwide Logistics and Temasek Polytechnic establish scholarship programme, announce 2013 winners

Description: Menlo Worldwide Logistics (Menlo) and Temasek Polytechnic signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 27 June 2013 to establish a new scholarship programme for students pursuing careers in logistics and supply chain management. Under the programme, Menlo established four annual scholarships of S$2,500 each. These scholarships were awarded to selected students in their third and final year of study pursuing the Diploma in Operations and Logistics Managementat at TP's School of Business. The recipients of Menlo's four scholarships for 2013 were Ong Si Ru Sharon, Lim KeWei Daryl James, Goh Jia Xian and Shen Zhi Kai Darrell. Description: Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, officiated at the opening session of Temasek Polytechnic's 23rd Graduation Ceremony on Friday, 17 May 2013 at 9.00am at the Temasek Convention Centre. The graduation ceremonies spanned over 14 sessions from 17 - 23 May 2013. This year, the first cohort of 66 graduands from the diploma in Early Childhood Studies received their diplomas. The first session saw Mr Heng presenting the Lee Kuan Yew Award, the Lee Kong Chian Award, the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal Award, the CapitaLand Award for All-Round Excellence and the Lee Kong Chian Award for All-Round Excellence. In this opening session, in addition to the presentation of the top poly-level award winners, Mr Heng addressed the graduands from the Diplomas in Culinary & Catering Management and Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Description: The Design Show 2013 was held on 1 April 2013. The emphasis for the design show was on social and community design resulting in a showcase of fresh and innovative design solutions to pressing contemporary social issues today. Four hundred projects from the graduating class of Temasek Polytechnic's School of Design were showcased including the humanitarian support backpacks, prosthetic arms for children, eldercare spaces, rejuvenating Pulau Ubin and designing orphanages in Cambodia. Seven groups of students from the Diploma in Moving Images were awarded the Development Assistance Grant by the Media Development Authority (MDA). One of the funded films was "Make me laugh" produced by Aloysius Lim.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) developed a new nano-engineered screen protector that turned the ordinary screens of handheld devices into 3D displays. It would be marketed by start-up, Nanoveu Pte Ltd. The unique plastic film could also potentially be used as next generation security tokens employed by banks and corporations. Dr Jaslyn Law, the IMRE scientist and Mr Frank Chan, the TP scientist who led the overall National Research Foundation (NRF) funded project worked on the product since 2010. Description: The Graduate Employment Survey, jointly conducted by the five polytechnics in 2012, revealed that polytechnic graduates enjoyed an increase in starting salaries. This increase applied to both fresh graduates and post-National Service (NS) graduates. The higher starting salaries of graduates attested to the strong value of a polytechnic education, and showed how employers continued to appreciate skilled polytechnic graduates.The annual Graduate Employment Survey was jointly conducted by Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic to ascertain the employment status of polytechnic graduates.
