Polytechnic Foundation Programme seminar : new through-train pathway for Normal (Academic) students

Description: On 18 July 2012, a nationwide Join-Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) was organised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and all five polytechnics. Secondary schools were invited to send their top Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students to attend the seminar. An estimated 1,800 students and their parents as well as teachers attended the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) seminar to find out more about PFP. Mr William Lim, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education (MOE) Higher Education Division, enlightened guests on the PFP. PFP offers a practice-oriented curriculum to prepare Normal (Academic) students for entry into relevant polytechnic diploma courses. This programme is an alternative pathway to Secondary Five and offers students the opportunity to pursue diplomas with more than 80% of Polytechnic Diploma courses in all five polytechnics in Singapore. Ms Katherine Rajah, Temasek Polytechnic's Assistant Director, School of Engineering Academic Development spoke on TP's PFP one-year programme which offered a practice-oriented curriculum that was specially designed to lay a strong foundation in Language and Mathematics and gave polytechnic-bound Normal (Academic) students a foretaste of their chosen diploma courses. The seminar's Q&A session provided a platform for the audience to surface questions regarding PFP to a panel comprising of representatives from MOE and the five polytechnics. PFP student ambassadors were also on hand to provide information on the programme and the different courses that TP offered. This first Joint-PFP seminar was held at the Republic Polytechnic Agora Halls.

Young leaders series, March 2013

Description: Temasek Polytechnic hosted the Young leaders series on 19 March 2013 for some 120 students from 18 secondary schools. Organised by the Corporate Communications Department, this series of events invited outstanding students with good academic and CCA records to come to TP for a day and get a taste of some of the opportunities they would be able to enjoy as TP Scholars and student leaders. This outreach programme, which imparted essential life skills while showcasing the benefits of a TP education was conducted by the Centre for Character & Leadership Education and the Entrepreneurship Centre. Besides students learning about building self-confidence, they were assigned an entrepreneurship project entitled "KoolWerkz challenge" to sell KoolWerkz frozen desserts. These enterprising students were able to pick up key entrepreneurial and marketing skills to successfully persuade staff and students to buy the frozen desserts and raised $555 for TP's Campus Care Network funds.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) through the Centre for Ageing Studies and School for Humanities & Social Sciences held its inaugural Seniors' Week on 19 & 20 October 2016 and the inaugural EngAGE Symposium 2016 on 21 October 2016. Under the theme, "Transforming ageing: enrich, engage, empower", the different schools and departments in TP collaborated and organised 19 activities and workshops. Some interesting highlights were Mindfulness practices for a better you and Fitness & exercise for older adults. The launch of TP's Seniors' Week 2016 was marked by Conductorcise, an exhilarating new "fitness fusion" sound workout for mind, body and soul. Prof Alfred Chan, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission Hong Kong, was the keynote speaker at the inaugural symposium.

Visit by students of Yishun Town Secondary School

Description: On 3 July 2013, students from Yishun Town Secondary School visited the Temasek Polytechnic. Staff from the Centre for Foundation Studies shared on the different admission routes to polytechnic studies including the one-year Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) at TP. The foundation programmme's practice-oriented curriculum will prepare Normal (Academic) students for entry into relevant polytechnic diploma courses. The 1st batch of student intake for the PFP @ TP commenced in April 2013 for students who performed very well in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE N-level Examinations.

Beyond O Level, Poly/JC seminar 1998

Description: The Beyond O Level, a Poly/JC seminar was jointly organised by The New Paper and Temasek Polytechnic on 10 January 1998. It was held at Temasek Polytechnic campus and sponsored by American International Assurance (AIA). O Level holders and their parents attended the seminar to find out what the various educational institutions had to offer. The three guest speakers for the seminar were: Mrs Belinda Charles, principal of St Andrew's Junior College; Mr Moses Wong, registrar of Temasek Polytechnic; and Mr Eugene Wijeysingha, former headmaster of Raffles Institution and columnist on educational matters for The New Paper. One-on-one counselling was also provided after the seminar for students and parents with specific queries. The team of counsellors included those from St Andrew's Junior College, lecturers from Temasek Polytechnic and guidance officers from the Ministry of Education.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic's Parental guidance seminar (PGS) is an annual event specially put together to help parents understand the options that students have after their O levels. On 3 July 2010, TP hosted the seminar for more than 700 parents and students, who got to find out more about a polytechnic education, TP courses, scholarships, and further education and career opportunities. They heard from alumni members about life in TP, and took the chance to ask questions during the Q&A session with the Registrar, Ms Sharon Soh and senior staff members from the academic schools. The visitors were taken on a tour of the academic schools where they had the opportunity to see for themselves TP's excellent learning facilities first hand. They aslo benefited from interacting with the lecturers, which helped them understand better the courses available at TP.

It was held from 29 Sep to 1 Oct 2015 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. Professor Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment, from the Institute of Education, University of London delivered the 1st and 3rd keynote addresses titled "How do we prepare our students for a world we cannot possibly imagine?" and "Principles of curriculum design". Professor Dai Hounsell, Professor of Higher Education & Vice-Principal for Academic Enhancement, Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, Scotland delivered the 2nd keynote address titled "Trying something new : rethinking teaching, advancing learning". Ms Sim Ann, Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Communications & Information was the guest-of-honour at the opening of the 3-day conference.

Description: A showcase of more than 40 projects by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Applied Science was held at TP's Applied Science Show to industry partners and the public on Wednesday, 1 October 2014 at TP's Auditorium 3. The opening address was delivered by Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic. Among the projects showcased were "Turning waste to plastic", "Improving nutrition and quality of ornamental fish" and "1st database on the GI of Asian food". Professor (Dr.) Thomas Wolever, the world's founder of GI Testing, was in attendance at the show. Representatives from industry partners like Sembcorp, Agilent Technologies Singapore and Hockhua Traditional Medicine participated in the industry symposium.

Description: More than 250 invited O level school leavers and their parents attended TP's first ever Scholarship Showcase, held on the last day of the Open House on 7 January 2012. Mr Edmond Khoo, Deputy Principal kicked off the Showcase with an inspiring address in which he highlighted how TP invested in its outstanding students. It was a must-visit event that catered exclusively to the needs of parents and students awaiting the O level results. Organised by Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and held in conjunction with TP's Open House, the aim of the informative seminar was to address the many questions parents and students had regarding a polytechnic education in Singapore. There were sharing sessions by Ms Sharon Soh, TP Registrar, Mr Sahfahri Supar, TP alumnus and current TP students as well as a Q&A session comprising of senior academic and adminstrative staff to answer any questions from the audience concerning the courses available, admission requirements and student life. Poly-ITE Social Innovation Research Forum 2012

Description: The inaugural Poly-ITE Social Innovation Research (SIR) Forum - a platform to showcase projects co-funded by Tote Board as part of the Social Innovation Research (SIR) Fund was held at the Auditorium, Singapore Polytechnic on Friday, 27 April 2012. Supported by the National Council of Social Services (NCSS), the SIR Forum 2012 showcased 19 of the research projects related to healthcare, special needs, the elderly, and the environment, undertaken by staff and students from the Institute of Technical Education, Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek Polytechnics. Presentations were made by representatives from each polytechnic and the ITE. Various voluntary welfare organizations under NCSS were also present to share real-life challenges faced by the social service community. The SIR Fund provided seed funding for R&D projects that bring social and environmental benefits, and enables these institutions to devise creative and feasible solutions for deployment. The keynote speaker for the Forum was Mr Willie Cheng, Member, Lien Centre for Social Innovation and Chariman, TOTE Board SIR Fund Selection Panel.
