Description: Under the Spring Singapore's Innovation Voucher Scheme (IVS), Temasek Polytechnic's School of Applied Science helped small and medium enterprises (SMES) developed innovative ideas to stay ahead of competition. Temasek Polytechnic (TP) had developed 31 projects which were showcased at TP's School of Applied Science Project Show held on 28 March 2012. Tongkat Ali and Diabetic-friendly cheesecakes were among the projects showcased. Mr Allan Albert Teoh, founder, AllanBakes and Dr Lau Peck Ting, Managing Director, Quintech life Sciences Pte Ltd shared on the benefits of IVS. The IVS had also benefitted the local traditional medicine industry such as H.W. Traditional Medicine, Wen Ken Marketing and Tai Tong Ah Co. During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding was inked between Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) and TP. Under the terms of agreement, NJUCM would provide expertise over three years to further strengthen ASc's capability in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLCP) fingerprinting. The event also saw the launch of a book titled "High performance liquid chromatography fingerprinting technology of the commonly-used traditional Chinese medicine herbs".

Description: Temasek Foundation brought together Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and NTUCs Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to develop a two-week course called RNA Virus Molecular-based Testing-Training to support the demand for more specialised laboratory technicians. The course curriculum was developed by staff from TPs School of Applied Science, and will train participants to do COVID-19 testing via blended learning and hands-on practical sessions. Lessons will cover basic knowledge and skills needed to work in a molecular diagnostic laboratory for virus detection. The training involves the use of automated commercial diagnostic equipment, contributed by Temasek Foundation.

Description: A showcase of more than 40 projects by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Applied Science was held at TP's Applied Science Show to industry partners and the public on Wednesday, 1 October 2014 at TP's Auditorium 3. The opening address was delivered by Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic. Among the projects showcased were "Turning waste to plastic", "Improving nutrition and quality of ornamental fish" and "1st database on the GI of Asian food". Professor (Dr.) Thomas Wolever, the world's founder of GI Testing, was in attendance at the show. Representatives from industry partners like Sembcorp, Agilent Technologies Singapore and Hockhua Traditional Medicine participated in the industry symposium.

Press release. 04 Oct. 2016. Temasek Polytechnic scientists set to boost productivity of SMEs with Centre of Innovation for Complementary Health Products

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) launched Singapore's first Centre of Innovation for Complementary Health Products (COI CHP) in June 2016. Funded by SPRING Singapore, it was a one-stop service centre for CHP related enterprises. The key capability areas of the COI CHP included chemical and biological testing, glycemic index analysis as well as safety and efficacy studies. These were some of the areas that were showcased at TP's annual Applied Science Show held on Wednesday, 5 October 2016. A two-day International Conference in Analytical Science followed the Applied Science Show. Some of the related projects serviced by the COI CHP on show included: Herbal ingredient screening of GNC's liver protector for quality control and Rapid testing to identify antioxidant compounds in food, herbs and CHP. The opening of the show also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between TP and its industry partner Eu Yan Sang Singapore. Mr Peter Lam, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic delivered the welcome address and Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, TP's School of Applied Science gave the opening address. Dr Kalpana Bhaskaran, Glycemic Index Research Unit, Temasek Polytechnic presented a paper on "Winning the war on diabetes -- the low GI way!"

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP), which housed the only accredited Glycemic Index (GI) Research Unit in the region, has launched two new part-time courses on nutrition targeted at individuals who are keen to equip themselves with knowledge of basic nutrition and diabetes. Both courses are supported and subsidised by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). The two new courses on nutrition are "The nutrition therapy for the prevention and management of diabetes" and "The nutrition for optimum health". Both courses, run quarterly, are conducted by a team of experts from TP, led by Dr Kalpana Bhaskaran, who is Domain Lead of Applied Nutrition & Glycemic Index Research at TP's School of Applied Science. TP also collaborated with food manufacturing company, Faesol Pte. Ltd. to create a low GI multigrain drink - iLite GrainsPlus which is available in all NTUC FairPrice outlets.

Press release. 04 Nov. 2014. Women use dining plate to teach nutrition and empower Cambodian villagers

Description: Her Excellency, Dr Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister of Women's Affairs, Cambodia presented the Certificate in Food Science and Nutrition to 30 women from the Cambodian Ministry of Women's Affairs (MWA) who were the first to complete a 4-year Food Science & Nutrition Certification Programme at Temasek Polytechnic (TP). The presentation ceremony took place on Global Community Day 2014, Friday, 7 November 2014 at TP's Glocal Connect Village. This programme was part of the agreement undertaken between TP and Temasek Foundation (TF) in 2011 for the execution of "Public Health and Nutrition Intervention Training Programme" in Cambodia.

Description: A joint partnership between Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Temasek Foundation (TF) on a four year nutrition intervention programme in Cambodia. The programme is funded by TF with a grant of about S$223,000 and involved the staff and students of TP's School of Applied Science in imparting knowledge in the areas of nutrition, food hygiene and safety practices to 150 programme participants. Press release. 05 Jan. 2017. Temasek Polytechnic and NTUC Foodfare create healthier, low GI meals for the community

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and NTUC Foodfare signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the "War on diabetes" to develop healthier meal options that would benefit the masses through NTUC Social Enterprises' reach of dining, supermarket, eldercare and early childhood education chains. A series of healthier choice, low Glycemic Index (GI) halal meals, created by TP's School of Applied Science were made available at NTUC Foodfare's newly opened dining space, Kitchen Loft. TP also created six varieties of low GI ready-to-eat frozen pizzas that were included in NTUC FairPrice's house brand range of products. The new product range had been tested at the region's only accredited GI Research Unit housed at TP and was expected to be made available at NTUC FairPrice stores from April 2017. Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) attended the unveiling of the Low GI meals, and also witnessed the MOU signing between TP and NTUC Foodfare. Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, School of Applied Science at TP and Mr Perry Ong, CEO at NTUC Foodfare signed the MOU on 5 January 2017.

Description: The Centre for Applied Nutrition Services (CANS) was launched at Temasek Polytechnic's Nutrition Symposium on 19 June 2012. The Centre provided holistic support service in areas of applied nutrition to the various food and health-related industries as well as the nutrition, health and wellness sectors. According to Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, School of Applied Science, TP had received close to half a million dollars from industry collaborations and consultancy services related to food & nutrition projects as well as healthy product development. Completed projects included healthier cheesecakes from AllanBakes, glycemic index (GI) testing of products from local and multinational companies, HACCP/food safety and nutritional analysis.

Description: The Ministry of Health in Lao PDR, Temasek Polytechnic and Temasek Foundation teamed up to initiate a three-year capacity building training programme on public healthcare and nutrition intervention. Trainers from Temasek Polytechnic shared their knowledge in nutrition intervention with 100 public health and nutrition officials from schools, hospitals and health centres across Lao PDR. The opening ceremony of the Public Healthcare and Nutrition Intervention Programme was held on 14 Dec 2015 in Vientiane, Lao PDR, officiated by H.E Prof Eksavang Vongvichit, Minister of Health, Lao PDR. Also present were Mr Dominic Goh, Singapore Ambassador to Lao PDR, Mr Benedict Cheong, Chief Executive Officer, Temasek Foundation, and Dr Lee Chee Wee, Director, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic. Training was conducted both in Singapore and Lao PDR. It commenced in Vientiane from 14 to 18 December 2015, followed by two-week training in Singapore in March 2016.

Press release. 27 June 2016. Singapore's 1st Resource Centre for Aquaculture & Veterinary Science is launched in Temasek Polytechnic

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) launched the Centre for Aquaculture and Veterinary Science (CAVS), the first of its kind in Singapore on Monday, 27 June 2016 at Auditorium 3. Guest-of-honour was Dr Koh Poh Koon, Minister of State for Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Trade and Industry. The inauguration of CAVS also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between TP and its industry partner APOLLO Aquaculture Group Pte Ltd. The partnership would see joint activities and commitments in areas such as research and development efforts for intensive cultivation of fish and crustaceans, as well as training programmes for TP students in aquaculture engineering, production and support. Among these projects were "First-of-its-kind Algae-based oral vaccine for fish" and "Innovative kit for on-site detection of food contaminants". The inaugural Institution of Aquaculture Singapore (IAS) Conference was held at TP following the Applied Science Show.
