Polytechnic Foundation Programme seminar : through-train pathway for Normal (Academic) students

Description: On 28 August 2013, more than 1,000 secondary school students and their parents as well as teachers attended the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) seminar held at the Republic Polytechnic. Mr William Lim, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education (MOE) Higher Education Division, enlightened guests on the PFP. PFP offers a practice-oriented curriculum to prepare Normal (Academic) students for entry into relevant polytechnic diploma courses. This programme is an alternative pathway to Secondary Five and offers students the opportunity to pursue more than 80% of diploma courses offered in the five local polytechnics. Ms Katherine Rajah, Temasek Polytechnic's Assistant Director, School of Engineering Academic Development spoke on TP's PFP one-year programme which offers a practice-oriented curriculum that is specially designed to lay a strong foundation in Language and Mathematics and give polytechnic-bound Normal (Academic) students a foretaste of their chosen diploma courses. The seminar's Q&A session provided a platform for the audience to raise questions regarding PFP to a panel comprising of representatives from MOE and the five polytechnics.

Parental guidance seminar 2014

Temasek Polytechnic Open House 2005, day 3 - Jam & Hop

Description: The Temasek Polytechnic Open House was held from 17 to 19 February 2005. The annual event was held to enable secondary school students to make an informed choice regarding their educational path after they have completed their studies. Visitors were given the opportunity to meet up with the lecturers from the respective schools to find out more on the diploma courses offered. I-Guides, a group of volunteer students, were on hand to guide visitors around the campus and brief them about the various schools and activities going on. Some of the activities provided during the 3-day open house included a fashion show, performances by TP students and for the first time ever, water adventures such as dragon boating, canoeing and canoe-polo were organised and held at Bedok Reservoir. The finale of the Open House was the Jam and Hop session on 19 February 2005 evening with entertainment by renowed local groups such as Pug Jelly, Noize and Turning Point.

Launch of Disability Awareness Week carnival

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) worked closely with the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) to further the financial independence of their members. TP students developed a business plan for them to sell an original dessert developed by TP and trained them on how to serve it. The dessert was sold by MINDS members at the launched of the Disability Awareness Week carnival on 3 December 2005 at the HDB Hub in Toa Payoh. The guest-of-honour for the event was Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.

Temperature badge

Description: The Temperature Badge was first created during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003. It can store up to 10 readings and reminds the wearer to take a temperature reading at regular intervals. Coloured flashing lights indicate the presence of a fever. Description: The Beyond O Level, a Poly/JC seminar was jointly organised by The New Paper and Temasek Polytechnic on 17 February 2001. It was held at Temasek Polytechnic Auditorium 1. O Level holders and their parents attended the seminar to hear different views of life on campus and to find out what the various educational institutions had to offer. The panel of speakers for the seminar were: Mrs Tan Leng Leng, Director of the Manpower Research and Statistics Department, Ministry of Manpower; Mr Tan Tiek Kwee, principal of Anderson Junior College and Mr Ang Keng Loo, deputy principal of Temasek Polytechnic. Freshmen Orientation Grand Finale 2000

Description: The highlight of TP's Week Zero Orientation Camp 2000 was the traditional "Final Clash", which would see students from the four Schools competing against each other in the telematch and cheerleading competition. Temasek Engineering School emerged as the winner for this year. Over 4000 freshmen sold cute little teddy bears by Sasha Bear Company at various locations around Singapore to raise funds for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), National Kidney Foundation's Children's Kidney Transplant Centre, and TP's Campus Care Network. BG George Yeo, Minister for Trade and Industry, was the Guest-of-Honour for the orientation finale held at the Triangular Garden on 30 June 2000. Five confetti canons were fired, and two students abseiled down from the sixth-storey corridor accompanied by fireworks to welcome him.

Temasek Polytechnic Open House 1998

Description: The Temasek Polytechnic Open House was held from 12 to 14 February 1998. About 400 students were recruited as I-Guides or Information Guides for the first time. The guides acted as walking "information booths", guiding visitors, providing information on the polytechnic and leading groups of students and teachers from their secondary schools to TP. A cybercafe for teachers was also provided for secondary school teachers that accompanied their students to the Open House. Beside course and career counsellings, visitors were also invited to link up with an overseas friend via satellite, design web pages and try pottery and caricature demos. Other highlights included in the annual event were a student fashion show and live performances.

Journey of the Youth Olympic flame : community celebration at Temasek Polytechnic

Description: The Youth Olympic flame started its journey through the heartlands of Singapore on a seven day torch relay from 7 to 14 August 2010. On 10 August 2010, Temasek Polytechnic was privileged to play host to this very special event - the arrival of the Youth Olympic flame on the third day of the torch relay which had made its way across the North East district throughout the day. Temasek Polytechnic graduate Foo Xiu Quan, had the honour of carrying the torch across Bedok Reservoir on a dragon boat. A 20-member crew from TP ensured a smooth ride for the symbol of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Singapore was hosting. Flanked by guest of honour, Mr George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Mr Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, TP's Evangelin Tan brought the Olympic flame into the campus, and Mr Yeo lit the cauldron with the Youth Olympic flame at the Triangular Garden. Performances by Monsters, a Taiwanese cheerleading team, Derrick Hoh from the reality singing contest "Project Superstar", TP Vox, Riley in the Morning and TP's Dance Ensemble made it an enjoyable and memorable night for all. To end the night, students sang the YOG theme song, "Everyone". Also participating in the Community Celebration @ TP to welcome the arrival of the YOG flame at the Triangular Garden were Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community, Youth & Sports, Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of Singapore 2010 Organising Committee and Mr Seah Moon Ming, Chairman of TP's Board of Governors.

Symposium on Traditional Medicine cum launch of Centre for Traditional Medicine

Description: Temasek Polytechnic's School of Applied Science (ASc) organised the Symposium on Traditional Medicine on 6 April 2010. The welcome address was given by Mrs Lay-Tan Siok Lie, Deputy Principal and the guest of honour was Mr Ted Tan, Deputy CEO, SPRING Singapore. Guests speakers for the symposium included Dr Lee Chee Wee, Chief Executive Officer, Lynk Biotechnologies P/L, Dr Allan Lim, Coordinator, Nestle R&D Center (Pte) Ltd Singapore, Ms Karol Tong, President, The Medicine Manufacturing Association of Singapore and Ms Samantha Su, Deputy Director, Services & Biomedical and International Partnership Office (Europe & Middle East) SPRING Singapore. Mrs Soon-Ong Meng Wan, Director, School of Applied Science gave tokens of appreciation to the guest speakers. The symposium was followed by the launch of the Centre for Traditional Medicine by guest of honour Mr Ted Tan. Mr Tan and symposium participants were given a tour of the Centre for Traditional Medicine after the launch. The Centre provides an integrated approach to present ASc's comprehensive capabilities in traditional medicine (TM) to the industry. With the growing interest in this alternative medical system, the Centre would serve as a one-stop centre offering services ranging from consultancy to training especially in the modernisation of the TM industry as it hopes to preserve the relevance of TM for the younger generation, focusing on the quality, safety and efficacy of TM.
